How have
you connected all three of your products?
you connected all three of your products?
The main connectivity between our three products is the
motif of a strong female character. This was done in order to represent the
independence aspect to the video that we wanted audiences to see and feel
inspired by. By doing this we aimed for our products to both act as a
juxtaposition to the R&B genre, as well as a synergistic element to all
three of our products, which audiences could see. Through out all products the
shared use of a images and scenes of our protagonist looking at the camera can
be seen as we aimed to create a product we felt could connect to audiences. By
looking at the camera, we wanted to create the effect of the protagonist
speaking and connecting to the audience empowering them as she sings to them.

How does
each develop the other? (Music Video)
each develop the other? (Music Video)
When creating the music video, we aimed to stand out from
all its R&B predecessors, which meant we had to do the opposite of what
audiences would usually expect to see in a typical R&B music video. Rather
than the use of a slow beat tempo over meaningful lyrics that depict heart
break as demonstrated by examples such as Mariah Careys ‘We Belong Together’.
Our group went for a song that contains meaningful lyrics but instead was sung
over a fast rapid beat usually associated with partying and drinking. In doing
this we wanted to depict a female protagonist that instead of anguishes in a
break up, chooses to relish in it by giving her other half the chance to leave
if he wants too, as we felt that rather than conveying this typical convention
and moulding into the same generic product, we would break the chain. This was done through the use of the typical
convention of singing to the camera as if releasing the truth to the world and
portraying a strong female rather than a victim. In achieving this break, we
were able to create a sense of independence that would in turn tie to our print
products.

How does
each develop the other? (Digipak)
each develop the other? (Digipak)
With
independence being the subtle theme of our music video, we were able to gain a
large amount of stills that incorporate the same feel as the music video. This
led us to the development of the digipaks front image choice, which had the
protagonist harbour a look of determination rather than sadness as her back is
to her ex-lover and antagonist. A still that would’ve been hard to obtain if
our music video was following the normal conventions of the R&B genre
associated with relationships and break ups.

Being that our music video demonstrates a journey through
the main protagonist’s love life during the narrative we chose to have a
mixture of stills that within the music video that represented both past and
present. These images were to symbolise the key points in the relationship
giving the audience a little visual guide as they listen to the soundtrack and look
at the digipak cover. When choosing the perfect disc cover for the album, I
felt it best to use an image of the theatre in order to symbolise the drama of
a relationship that the artist portrays within the variety of songs in the
album.

How does
each develop the other? (Magazine Advert)
each develop the other? (Magazine Advert)
Using stills directly from the music video, we decided upon
the choice of enlarging an image of the female protagonist in order to make the
magazine advert stand out from a distance but also to show a sense of empowerment.
This coupled well with the ‘sassy’ expression on the actors face added to the
feeling of no longer caring about the relationship, a viewpoint we aimed to
capture within our music video. Aside from the use of the enlarged image, the
addition of critics further develops the digipak imprinted below as it both
promotes the digipak as well as further add a professional look to it. By
increasing its overall professional look the magazine advert creates an image
of a product that could be a success in the market encouraging audiences to
look at it if not seen before.

What do
your ancillary texts add to your main text?
your ancillary texts add to your main text?
A trait
normally found in the R&B genre; with the magazine advert, the use of the
colour black was a choice I felt we should take in order to give audience a
slight taste of what our music video is about whilst still adding to the main
texts theme of independence. This is because of the meaning of the colour black
which stands for power and control. This coupled with the enlarged still image
both followed the R&B genres codes and conventions of magazine covers using
standard colours such as black and white to cause images to stand out and
express the type of lyrical content whilst at the same time challenging the
conventions expected by audiences as it refers to relationships just like most
associated with the colour black. However, rather than a depressing track list
its one that’s fast yet deep.

In terms of the digipak, using a still image used to express
the past in the music video. We felt it would be good to use this still to show
the sense of reflection that the main text harbours alongside its theme of
independence.

Does our
product share an identity?
product share an identity?
As a whole,
I feel that though they have some similarities our three products have different
identities. Whilst all of them have elements of the music video; the magazine
advert shows more focus on independence with the use of the colour black and
enlarged still of our female protagonist. The digipak however shows more of a
reflective stand point whilst still harbouring some independence. This is due
to the two individuals facing back to back as if ‘reflecting’ each other’s
actions s both arms are crossed for both individuals. These aspects coupled
with the choice of having our protagonist fully clothed in all products
emphasis on our choice to portray a young, black and beautiful character that
shows strength rather than sexualisation through voyeurism as demonstrated by
famous icons of the R&B genre such as Beyoncé, who can be seen over sexualising
themselves in order to appeal to the small percentage of male audiences within
this genre.

With views
in society changing on what is acceptable and the power of ‘sex sells’, by borrowing
and incorporating both the stand out points of the magazine adverts
independence and the digipaks reflection, our main text portrays the
independence representation that we aimed for throughout our planning and
filming in order to create and offer a positive as well as a powerful
representation of a female protagonist that can be loved by audiences both male
and female without the need for voyeuristic elements.

How could
we have developed our product to increase their synergy?
